A useful fit for

A documented full-face park/DH/BMX candidate for a shopper who wants Bell's named US CPSC and ASTM DH/BMX statements. Bell charts the L observed configuration at 57–59 cm and lists other size bands, but that table cannot establish shape, pressure, secure retention or individual fit; the manual says to try and adjust the exact helmet.

The main tradeoff

The base Sanction 2 does not carry the Mips Essential feature Bell assigns to the distinct DLX Mips version, and neither Spherical/Mips nor a specific fit system is established. The XXS chart ends at 51 cm on the exact table but at 50 cm in Bell's comparison article, so confirm that edge. The 1040 g manufacturer figure applies to M, not the observed L; no independent weight, measured cooling or specific equipment compatibility is documented.

Your needs, this model

Does it fit your priorities?

Can the Sanction 2 be considered for a child rider?

Bell calls the model Unisex, describes it for young riders and offers an XXS chart row in select colors. The exact page's chart lists 48–51 cm, while Bell's comparison article says 48–50 cm and describes that XXS as for riders as young as five; Bell also prints a CPSC age-five-and-older statement. Treat this as child-inclusive only when the exact color/size and the child's try-on are verified, and ask Bell to resolve the XXS endpoint rather than assuming every color or every size is child-specific.

Does the base Sanction 2 provide a documented Spherical/Mips system?

No. Bell's comparison assigns Mips Essential to the different Sanction 2 DLX and presents the base Sanction 2 as the choice without that feature. The base page does not name Spherical/Mips, so the standard model does not meet that narrower design filter; this distinction is not an injury or crash-performance conclusion.

What does Bell's Sanction 2 chart say about the observed L configuration?

Bell's exact table lists XXS 48–51, XS/S 51–55, M 55–57, L 57–59 and XL 59–61 cm. The Electric Blue / L observation is in Bell's L row, but adjacent chart endpoints are not size choices and the full-face shell must be tried on. Bell's comparison gives a different XXS endpoint (50 cm), so that small-size discrepancy needs confirmation.

This is a document-based assessment, not a ride or fit review. The observed US listing is Bell Sanction 2 style 100000001500000024, Electric Blue / L, SKU BL-7203569. Bell cross-lists the same style/SKU under MTB and BMX; it is one helmet family, not two alternatives. I have not ridden, worn, adjusted, weighed or impact-tested it.

Its full-face format is the first decision

Bell describes Sanction 2 as a full-face bicycle helmet and places it around newer park riders and BMX racers. Its US MTB directory placement and the exact page’s ASTM-1952-DH and ASTM-2032-BMX statements give more specific context than a generic “mountain” label. That makes the model relevant to a shopper considering park, downhill-oriented or BMX riding, but it does not prove suitability for every route, discipline or competition. Read the exact manufacturer instructions for the intended use.

The format is different from Bell’s 3Qtr-Air Mips. Bell calls 3Qtr-Air a half-shell without a chin bar; the Sanction 2 is described as full-face. This is a real construction difference, not evidence that one model will prevent a particular injury. See the 3Qtr-Air Mips assessment for the separate shell boundary.

Standards are claims to check on the actual helmet

The Sanction 2 page states US CPSC compliance for persons age five and older, plus ASTM-1952-DH and ASTM-2032-BMX. These are separate manufacturer statements, not tests here or a label check on an offer. Inspect the exact unit’s label and instructions, especially when the rider’s age or discipline matters.

Bell labels the listing Unisex and offers XXS in select colors; its comparison article describes XXS for riders as young as five. That makes this a child-inclusive style only in a narrow, size-dependent sense, not a child-only helmet or a fit recommendation. The CPSC text does not support a younger rider.

Use the chart cautiously, including its XXS mismatch

Bell’s exact US page lists XXS (select colors) 48–51 cm, XS/S 51–55 cm, M 55–57 cm, L 57–59 cm and XL 59–61 cm. The observed Electric Blue selector displays all five labels. Shared endpoints—51, 55, 57 and 59 cm—mean the chart rows meet; they do not choose a size or prove fit.

Bell’s separate comparison article gives XXS as 48–50 cm, one centimeter shorter than the exact chart’s upper value. The finder uses the exact product table but flags the discrepancy; ask Bell to clarify if a decision rests on 51 cm. The chart does not describe head shape, pressure or retention. Bell’s sizing guidance and manual instead call for measuring carefully, fastening and adjusting the helmet, and checking that it stays positioned. Still try on the exact size.

The selected directory configuration is Electric Blue / L, and Bell’s L row is 57–59 cm. The page lists 1040 g only for size M. That number is not the L weight and is not an independent measurement; I do not infer one from the helmet image or another Bell size.

Ventilation and removable cheek pads

Bell describes 14 vents, Ventilated DH Air padding and removable cheek pads. Its comparison says two brow vents are intended to reduce eyewear fogging and four cheek-pad thicknesses are available as small parts. These design details are not measured airflow, cooling, fog reduction or comfort. The page does not name a retention dial; removable cheek pads are not an adjustment system.

The Flying Bridge visor is another specific feature. Bell says the design is more flexible and improves airflow across the helmet, and explains that removing the traditional center post and screw leaves more energy-management material in a high-impact area. That remains Bell’s design description, not crash testing or a claim about an individual outcome. Confirm the visor and any replacement parts for the exact version being considered.

Sanction 2 is not the Sanction 2 DLX Mips

Bell’s comparison page says the standard and DLX versions share an ABS shell and EPS liner, but assigns Mips Essential to the distinct Sanction 2 DLX. It presents the standard Sanction 2 as the option without that additional feature. The base model’s page does not name Mips or Spherical/Mips, so a shopper who specifically requires the questionnaire’s documented Spherical/Mips design should not count it. The separate 5Fifty Spherical assessment documents Bell’s different Spherical/Mips label; that contrast is about named designs, not relative crash protection.

What the source record does not settle

The product page cannot establish another seller’s unit condition, impact history, return terms or package contents. It gives no head-shape profile, L-specific weight, independent fit result, specific goggle compatibility or NTA 8776 e-bike statement. Bell’s and CPSC’s dated recall pages did not name Sanction 2, but that is not unit-history clearance or a promise about future notices. Check current notices and the exact label before relying on a used helmet.
